Carolyn Bessette turned heads when she wore a simple, elegant slip dress for her wedding to John F. Kennedy Jr.

The former Calvin Klein publicist and the George founder got married in an intimate ceremony at the First African Baptist Church on Cumberland Island, Ga., on Sept. 21, 1996. The couple invited no more than 40 guests and celebrated afterward at the Greyfield Inn.

Before she said “I do,” Bessette enlisted her close friend and up-and-coming designer Narciso Rodriguez to create her custom dress. The two met while she was working at Calvin Klein, and he later said he was honored to design the $40,000 dress.

“It was a great moment in my career but also a beautiful moment in my personal life,” he told Vogue in 2018. “Someone I loved very much asked me to make the most important dress of her life.”

Less than three years after getting married, Bessette and JFK Jr., along with her sister Lauren, tragically died when he crashed the plane they were on while heading to Rory Kennedy‘s wedding.

Here’s everything to know about where Carolyn Bessette’s wedding dress is now.

Who designed Bessette’s wedding dress?

Bessette asked her close friend, designer Rodriguez, to make her dress. In February 2026, he reminisced on his and Bessette’s first meeting while she was still working at Calvin Klein.

“I met Carolyn when we both started to work at Calvin Klein and we lived in the same apartment building,” he told Vogue in February 2026. “And then her apartment became her shoe closet and she lived out of my apartment. Those were really great memorable years.”

Rodriguez also recalled how Bessette asked him to design her dress by taking him to one of her and JFK Jr.’s favorite restaurants, the Odeon in Tribeca.

“For me, it was the love of my life marrying the love of her life, and so it was a very heartfelt, emotional time,” he told the magazine. “I remember going to Odeon and having cosmos with her at the bar and her telling me that John had proposed and would I make her dress? It was such an exciting moment in all of our lives.”

Since the two were close friends, Rodriguez gifted her the dress, which had an estimated value of $40,000, per The New York Times. Bessette and Rodriguez worked together for months and traveled to Paris for two separate fittings.

“It’s a very sensuous dress,” Rodriguez told The New York Times after the wedding in September 1996. “That’s what we both wanted from the beginning.”

In addition to designing Bessette’s dress, Rodriguez also created Caroline Kennedy‘s navy matron of honor dress, PEOPLE reported at the time.

How did Bessette choose her wedding dress style?

At the time of Bessette and JFK Jr.’s wedding, her dress was a stark contrast to the standard ball gowns of the era. She wore a pearl-colored silk slip crepe silhouette dress cut on the bias with a cowl neckline and deep cowl back. She and Rodriguez came up with the design after he showed her several options.

“I had given her a couple of ideas, she thought one was too architectural, she pulled the neckline down and a dress was born,” Rodriguez told Vogue.

He further explained in an interview with The Cut in March 2026 that Bessette wanted him to prioritize her frame.

“Carolyn said to me that I create a frame for a woman’s personality and beauty to shine,” he told the publication. “And I love that. I always think that it’s my job to do that, to make a woman feel like her best self, that she shines. It’s not the dress that you notice. Look at that photograph of her. It’s her and that smile.”

Bessette accessorized her effortless look with a silk tulle veil and white sheer gloves that Rodriguez also designed and Manolo Blahnik crystal-beaded satin sandals. While her bridal outfit defied trends at the time, she honored her late mother-in-law, Jackie Kennedy Onassis, by wearing her clip in a low-bun hairstyle.

How was Bessette’s gown recreated for Love Story?

Bessette’s gown was recreated for the Ryan Murphy-created FX limited series Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette. The sixth episode depicts Bessette (Sarah Pidgeon) and JFK Jr. (Paul Anthony Kelly) tying the knot in the intimate Cumberland Island ceremony. The show’s costume designer Rudy Mance explained that it was the most difficult costume for him to remake, because he wanted to do it “justice.”

“It’s one of the most iconic and most photographed wedding dresses of all time, arguably,” Mance told Variety in March 2026. “I wanted to just silently work and pay my respects to [Rodriguez], do him and his beautiful work justice.”

Mance added, “Part of the magic of it was that it was so simple. But the way that it hung on her, and the way that it draped … I knew it had to be as exact as possible.”

Mance and his team researched all the photos, videos and coverage of the dress they could find and particularly drew inspiration from archival footage included in the 2019 documentary, JFK Jr. and Carolyn’s Wedding: The Lost Tapes. He said that he and his team “watched that probably 100 times” to “see how it moved and how it fell when she danced, when she walked, how it kicked out.”

The Love Story team created the on-screen dress from scratch and even utilized the same material that Rodriguez used after finding it at a fabric store in N.Y.C. Meanwhile, they found the same pair of Manolo Blahnik shoes in an archive and had the veil and gloves recreated by the original company that Rodriguez used.

“Now of course it’s so old, it’s yellowed and discolored, but he had the original swatch,” Mance said of the wedding dress fabric.

In addition to her ceremony dress, Bessette also wore a champagne-colored beaded dress. Mance and his team created a custom frock replicating her second gown by combining the lining of a champagne slip dress with a sheer beaded dress.

Where is Bessette’s wedding dress now?

Bessette and JFK Jr. died on July 16, 1999, after being married for less than three years.

A source told PEOPLE that Bessette’s wedding dress was returned to her family after her death, just like her sapphire and diamond engagement ring.
