WhatsApp update brings the new profile tab to iOS users

Following a few weeks of testing, WhatsApp is officially rolling out the new profile tab to iOS users. Here are the details.

Feature makes it easier to identify the active account

Last month, WABetaInfo reported that the TestFlight beta of WhatsApp replaced the Settings tab in the bottom right corner of the interface with a new tab called You.

At the time, the report explained that the new tab opened a redesigned profile settings page and used the user’s profile photo as its icon, instead of the usual stylized gear.

Now, according to the release notes for WhatsApp version 16.5.10.73 released today on the App Store, the change is officially rolling out to iOS users:

• The settings tab is now a profile tab, where you can manage your account, control your identity, and express yourself

This feature is a first step towards introducing multi-account support, which Meta has been testing and developing for a while.

By using the user’s profile photo as the icon for the You tab and highlighting it on the You page itself, WhatsApp makes it easier to identify which account is active at a glance.

This is similar to Instagram and Threads, which replace the default avatar icon with the user’s profile photo when multiple accounts are managed on the same device.

WABetaInfo notes that although the feature is rolling out to general users, its availability still appears limited, and some functionality remains restricted:

Although this update is not yet widely available, WhatsApp has also refreshed the profile page by adding a default cover photo at the top of the screen. The cover photo provides a large header that personalizes the profile. Currently, only a limited number of users have access to this feature. For those who can use it, the cover photo enhances the overall look of the profile and makes it easier to recognize. Currently, users cannot change their cover photo. This means that users will have to wait for a future update to replace the default cover photo with a personal image.

As with other WhatsApp updates, it may take some time before all users receive the new feature. Multiple users, myself included, still do not have access to the Liquid Glass interface that began rolling out last October, so the new You tab may also take a while to reach everyone.
