USA TODAY has hired Jamie Stockwell to serve as vice president of news, effective March 30, as the national outlet modernizes and tightens ties with the USA TODAY Network’s more than 200 local news organizations.
Stockwell brings deep experience leading high-stakes coverage across large, complex newsrooms. Most recently, she served as deputy managing editor of news at The Washington Post.
“Jamie’s career has been defined by ambitious journalism, digital innovation and a deep commitment to the evolving needs and preferences of modern audiences,” USA TODAY Senior Vice President Monica Richardson said in the March 10 announcement.
“Her experience building high-performing teams at a local and national level, driving transformation and producing high-impact storytelling with her candid leadership style will be instrumental as we accelerate USA TODAY’s evolution and solidify our role as America’s essential, facts-forward news source,” Richardson said.
Stockwell will report to Richardson as they work to grow the company’s broad national audience with “unbiased, high-impact journalism,” company officials said.
Stockwell began her journalism career at The Post as an intern and later as a metro reporter covering criminal justice for nearly eight years.
Stockwell went on to hold senior editing roles at The New York Times, where she was deputy national editor, and at the San Antonio Express‑News in Texas, where she served as managing editor.
She also played a key role in building Axios Local, serving as executive editor during its rapid expansion from eight to 30 markets and more than 100 journalists.
Prior to becoming The Post’s deputy managing editor of news, she directed coverage of major crises and led investigative and enterprise journalism as executive local editor.

Stockwell earned her bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Texas at Austin and has completed executive leadership training through the Hearst Management Institute and Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management.
