Toyota’s 1987 Supra Turbo Was Built To Be Driven, This One Still Wears Its Factory Tires

  • This pristine 1987 Supra Turbo has covered just 5,257 miles since new.
  • Power comes from a 3.0-liter turbocharged straight-six with 231 hp.
  • Burgundy leather defines the cabin, which remains in excellent shape.

Time has a funny way of turning once-common performance cars into artifacts of a very specific era. Few Japanese performance cars tug at the heartstrings of enthusiasts quite like the Toyota Supra. Produced across five generations, the Supra is an automotive icon, and pristine, low-mileage examples have become valued collector pieces.

Next month, Mecum Auctions will offer what may be one of the finest 1987 Supra Turbo models currently in the United States. It has covered just 8,461 km (5,257 miles), and the cabin presents exactly as you would hope from something that has spent most of its life being spared.

Bathed in Burgundy colored leather, the cabin of this Supra won’t be to everyone’s taste, but it could invoke some nostalgia among enthusiasts who grew up in this era. The door panels, transmission tunnel, steering wheel, and dashboard are all finished in Burgundy, too, and are complemented by brown floor mats.

Mecum hasn’t provided any ownership details for the car, but pictures show it sitting in a dealership, and it may have spent much of its life on this showroom floor. The listing notes that it was purchased new in Swift Current, Saskatchewan, Canada, on February 6, 1988, and that it still sits on the original tires. Obviously, they’ll need to be replaced if the next owner wants to drive the car.

A Timeless Design With Respectable Performance

The original 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine has been retained. Rated at 231 hp and 240 lb-ft (325 Nm), it provides a respectable level of power even to this day. Drive is sent to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. Moreover, this particular example comes with all of the owner’s manuals.

Unlike today’s BMW-powered GR Supra, this one comes with a removable targa roof and pop-up headlights, two features that define its era. There is no estimate attached, though that may be beside the point. For anyone interested in a neatly frozen slice of Toyota’s performance history, this example makes a persuasive case.
