‘The Voice’ alum dies at 26 after bitten by snake in her sleep

An aspiring Nigerian singer who competed on “The Voice Nigeria” has died after she was bitten by a snake in her sleep. She was 26.

Ifunanya Nwangene died at a Nigerian hospital after she was bitten by a venomous snake while asleep in her apartment in Abuja, BBC Africa reported.

The singer was brought to the Federal Medical Centre in Abuja for additional treatment. Hospital officials told The Guardian that medical staff attempted to treat Nwangene with available resources, including anti-venom. However, her condition deteriorated rapidly after severe complications linked to the snakebite.

Additionally, BBC Africa reported that a video shared to social media showed a snake handler removing a snake from the singer’s apartment after her death. The outlet reported that people can be heard in the video screaming, “It’s a cobra!”

Music director Sam C. Ezugwu with Amemuso Choir confirmed Nwangene’s “sudden” death in a statement shared on Facebook Feb. 1.

“Amemuso Choir [regrets] to announce the sudden demise of our beloved soprano,” the choir wrote. “A rising star, Ifunanya was on the cusp of sharing her incredible talent with the world. Her voice and spirit will be deeply missed.”

Nwangene, who also performed under the stage name Nanyah, gained national attention after appearing on the third season of “The Voice Nigeria” in 2021, where her blind audition performance earned praise from judges and viewers.

She later built a following through live performances, vocal covers and collaborations within Nigeria’s music scene. BBC Africa said she was “known for her versatility, blending jazz, opera, classical music and soul.”

Fans and loved ones, including prominent Nigerian content creator Seun Bharbs, left heartfelt tributes to Nwangene on her Instagram account.

“Rest in peace 💔🙏 May God grant your family and friends the strength to get through this difficult time. It is well,” Bharbs commented on a post.
