The New ‘Supergirl’ Trailer Is Filled With Krypto, Lobo, and ’60s Soul

The 1967 song “What Becomes of the Brokenhearted” by Jimmy Ruffin plays a significant role in the latest trailer for the upcoming DC film, Supergirl. It’s a very beautiful song whose lyrics are incredibly poignant when you think of the story of Kara Zor-El, who lost her entire planet, and Ruthye Marye Knoll, the young woman who seeks Kara’s help in the story:

“What becomes of the brokenhearted who had love that’s now departed? I know I’ve got to find some kind of peace of mind. Help me.”

Ruthye, played by Eve Ridley, is hoping to avenge the death of her parents at the hands of the evil Krem of the Yellow Hills (Matthias Schoenaerts). The same Krem who shoots Kara’s (Milly Alcock) best friend, Krypto. And so, as seen in the comic book series that inspired the film, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow by Tom King and Bilquis Evely, Kara will help Ruthye find Krem as a means to help her dog. But, along the way, they’ll both answer Jimmy Ruffin’s question, “What becomes of the brokenhearted?” Here’s the new trailer for Supergirl.

The song really gives the trailer a fair amount of reverence, which kind of beautifully clashes with the film’s action and humor. Some of that comes from the brief cameo by Superman himself, played by David Corenswet. But most of it comes from the addition of Jason Momoa as Lobo, whom we see a bunch of here. It’s unclear just how extensive the character will be in the story (he’s not in the source material comic), but this trailer makes it look like a fairly meaty role.

And, along the way, we’re going to see both Kara and Ruthye come to terms with those losses in their lives and realize that friendship and found family can be a nice way to help get over that. That and a whole lot of ass-kicking.

We’re really looking forward to this one. How about you?

Directed by Craig Gillespie and co-starring Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, and Emily Beecham, Supergirl opens June 26.
