Savannah Guthrie has been absent from the Today Show since her mom, Nancy Guthrie, disappeared from her home in Tucson, Arizona – and it’s unclear whether she will ever return
Savannah Guthrie’s future on the Today Show is currently uncertain, as the desperate search for her mom continues.
The NBC anchor, 54, has been absent from the program since her 84-year-old mom, Nancy Guthrie, was kidnapped from her home in Tucson, Arizona, earlier this month. Nancy was last seen on the evening of January 31, and she was reported missing the following day.
Savannah and her siblings have issued several statements on social media, addressing their mother’s kidnappers, but as the search nears its fourth week, investigators are still trying to locate Nancy. It comes after an ex-FBI agent revealed the hidden codeword that Savannah used in her message to the kidnappers.

As Savannah takes time off from the show, her former co-host Hoda Kotb has been filling in for the beloved presenter. A source has now claimed that there is “no way” Savannah will return to the show, even though she has not publicly commented on her future as the program’s anchor – a position she has held since 2012.
“I can’t imagine she would even want to [return],” an executive told Status News. However, should Savannah decide to leave Today for good, bosses would be left with the difficult task of finding a permanent replacement, since the host has become the face of morning news.
A different executive told the publication, “If you could pick one person across the span of morning TV that a show would not want to lose, it would be Savannah.
Savannah was always the glue on that show, and without that, this whole paradigm of our morning anchor team as a family, that connective tissue has just been ripped out.”
However, another source told Page Six that it’s impossible to know for sure whether Savannah will return, as she is currently focused on the search for her mom and not thinking about work.
The publication reported that 61-year-old Hoda, who left NBC in January 2025 after 26 years with the network, will be back again next week.
According to Page Six, while there is no plan to keep Hoda for the foreseeable future, executives will take the situation week by week. The outlet was previously told that Savannah will remain off the show for the “foreseeable future” as her colleagues and the entire TV network rally together to support her during “this unimaginable time.”
Earlier this week, investigators revealed that a glove discovered near Nancy’s residence – which seemed to match those captured in surveillance video outside her home – produced no DNA matches during analysis. Since Nancy’s disappearance, authorities have ruled out Savannah, her brother Camron, her sister Annie, and all their spouses as possible suspects.
Last Sunday, Savannah posted an Instagram video in which she issued an appeal to anyone with information about what happened to her mother. “It is never too late to do the right thing,” she said.
“And we are here. And we believe in the essential goodness of every human being, that it’s never too late.” It comes as the man who claims to know Nancy Guthrie’s kidnapper reveals the chilling reason he wants Bitcoin.
