Rebecca Ferguson Says She Has Just One Scene in ‘Dune: Part Three’

It happens in nearly every franchise: the arc of a beloved character will take a different direction—veering away from the main plot, that is—as the story progresses. The latest example has more reasoning behind it than, say, Finn’s and Rose’s increasingly diminished appearances in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, but it’s still kind of a bummer. According to Dune and Dune: Part Two star Rebecca Ferguson, her character, Lady Jessica—the mother of Paul Atreides—will have just one scene in Dune: Part Three.

Unlike Star Wars, Dune is based on a decades-old book series by Frank Herbert, so Lady Jessica’s story has already been shaped on the page—pages that take place mostly before the events of Dune: Part Three. Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Ferguson explained that her character’s “journey was number one and two.” In fact, “I don’t even think [Lady Jessica] was supposed to be in three.”

“And then [director] Denis [Villeneuve] was like, ‘I need to have one scene.’ And I get one scene.”

But, she added, “That was a weird feeling, walking onto a set that you know so well and knowing that you don’t have a part of it. There’s a lot of FOMO. And the acceptance of this is just what it is: just [serving the story].”

She didn’t share any details on what her scene might be (Lady Jessica is in the just-dropped trailer, so that must be the scene). But Ferguson did say she did still read the entire screenplay for Dune: Part Three, and that “the script is great. I think it’s going to be fantastic.”

Dune: Part Three hits theaters December 18.
