Super Smash Bros. Ultimate concluded its post-launch development with Sora from Kingdom Hearts. This resulted in the game having a completed roster made up of 86 characters (counting Echo Fighters).
While Masahiro Sakurai and the rest of the development team’s efforts to make the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster what it is today is certainly something to be appreciated by the community, it’s difficult to blame fans for still wanting additional video game icons included as new characters.
Over the years, it would seem that some of these fans have taken matters into their own hands. Thanks to the power of modding, even characters that weren’t originally intended to be in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate have now become playable.
As such, the Beefy Smash Doods has played an important role in highlighting a lot of the mods that fans have creatively come up with. This has resulted in a number of entertaining videos.

Just recently, however, Nintendo has apparently begun blocking videos by the Beefy Smash Doods that are intended to highlight various mods. In some ways, it feels a bit strange that Nintendo is only making this move now considering that the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate modding scene has been at it for years at this point.
“Sadly a lot of our modded character videos are being blocked globally right now. We were worried that this moment might come, seems like today is the day,” said the Beefy Smash Doods on X.
“We will try getting the videos back up, but if we can‘t that might mean no more modded character videos in the future.”
This event is causing the Beefy Smash Doods to speculate on why Nintendo might be doing this now. It’s well established that Nintendo is known for hosting Nintendo Direct presentations around February and March of nearly every year.
The Beefy Smash Doods believes that there’s a possibility that sees these blocked videos as being somehow connected to what Nintendo might be planning in this theoretical Nintendo Direct. Of course, it’s important to highlight that, as of right now, no such presentation has been announced.

While the speculative post from the Beefy Smash Doods might come across as reaching, there actually is a precedent for Nintendo doing something like this in the past. It actually could be pointing towards something major on the horizon.
Before Super Smash Bros. 4 was released, many fans played a mod for Super Smash Bros. Brawl known as “Project M.” Various tournaments even regularly streamed it live on Twitch.
Leading up to Super Smash Bros. 4’s release on the 3DS and Wii U, Nintendo apparently pressured Twitch to disallow Project M on its platform. Tournament organizers were eventually contacted to inform them that it would no longer be possible to stream Project M going forward.
At this point, it’s been nearly eight years since Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was originally released on December 7, 2018. It’s been almost five years since the last DLC character, Sora, was made available.
It’s interesting to note that Masahiro Sakurai and Bandai Namco recently concluded development on Kirby Air Riders for the Switch 2. Sakurai has noted before that there will be no DLC for Kirby Air Riders as it was released a complete package.
With all of this in mind, it’s highly likely that Sakurai already knows what his next project will be. Many have speculated that this could result in a new entry in the Super Smash Bros. series. Alternatively, a “Deluxe” edition of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on the Switch 2 also feels like a strong possibility.
While it might feel like it’s too soon for a new entry to be released, it’s entirely possible that Nintendo could use the next Nintendo Direct presentation to simply announce that a new title is in development.
