Nintendo explains why Switch 2 GameChat has a dedicated controller button, reveals scrapped logo designs

The Switch 2 has a handful of features over the original Switch, with GameChat being one of the big additions. GameChat lets Switch 2 players use a dedicated system-wide voice chat to talk with friends online, or even stream gameplay footage from their own system. GameChat even received its own dedicated button on the Switch 2 Joy-Con 2, and now Nintendo has revealed why.

Mr. Ashida has been a part of Nintendo’s Planning and Production Department since 2017, and he was deeply involved in the creation of the user interface for the Switch 2, and that very much included the GameChat side of things. In a new feature penned by Mr. Ashida, we learn that Nintendo decided to create a dedicated GameChat button in order to make the process of starting a chat that much easier for players, rather than making them jump through menus. Mr. Ashida also reveals a host of icons that were considered for the GameChat button, which you can see below.

To ensure that users can enjoy the new experience of “chatting while playing games” without stress, we felt that simple, easy-to-use controls were necessary. Therefore, we came up with the idea of adding a dedicated “button” to the controller so that chatting can be started with a single action.

…Regarding the icons on the buttons, we comprehensively evaluated them from multiple perspectives, including not only their clarity in terms of design, but also whether they could be associated with words related to conversation (Chat / Communication / Conversation…), whether they were easy for customers to pronounce, whether the explanations within the device’s functions were concise, and whether they harmonized with the existing A and B button layout. Ultimately, we decided to place a simple “C button” with a “C” drawn on it below the home button.
