New York State cash payment law takes effect Saturday with specific exemptions

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A new cash payment law goes into effect on Saturday.

Under the law, stores throughout New York State must let customers pay in cash. There are a few exceptions.

Stores don’t have to accept bills in denominations above $20. They also don’t have to accept cash for orders made by phone, mail or internet — unless the transaction happens at the store.

The law also doesn’t apply if a store has a device to convert cash into a prepaid card.

For more information on the law, visit the Office of the New York State Attorney General’s website here.
