Marty Supreme, The Perfect Neighbor, Tie

As he did last year, Timothée Chalamet received one of the first shoutouts of the night from Oscars host Conan O’Brien, but, in another repeat, both Chalamet and his film nominated for multiple awards (this year Marty Supreme with nine nods, last year A Complete Unknown with eight nods) left empty-handed.

Marty Supreme, which has grossed more than $179 million at the global box office and boasts a 93 percent freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes, was completely shut out, not winning one of the nine awards for which it was nominated at the 2026 Oscars. That stat gives the Josh Safdie-directed film one of the worst Oscar nights in history, behind winless 11-time nominees The Turning Point and The Color Purple and 10-time nominees Gangs of New York, True Grit, American Hustle, The Irishman and Killers of the Flower Moon. Other nine-time nominees that went winless include The Little Foxes, Peyton Place and The Banshees of Inisherin.

Other multiple nominees that failed to win a single award include four-time nominees Bugonia, The Secret Agent and Train Dreams. Meanwhile, Marty Supreme‘s fellow nine-time nominees Sentimental Value and Hamnet each only won one award, though they were high-profile prizes in best international feature and best actress, respectively. Still, that’s a low rate of return for how many nominations those titles each secured.

Beyond those snubs, the 2026 Oscars was full of surprises. There was a rare tie in the live-action short category with both Singers and Two People Exchanging Saliva winning the award. And Mr. Nobody Against Putin was a surprise winner in the best documentary feature category, defying numerous experts’ predictions that The Perfect Neighbor would win. The Perfect Neighbor director Geeta Gandbhir had a chance to win both best documentary feature and documentary short categories but unfortunately lost both.

Still, Sinners cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw made history as the first Black woman, or woman of any ethnicity, to win the best cinematography Oscar, an award that a number of pundits expected would go to One Battle After Another. And in a similar switch, One Battle won the Oscars’ best casting award that many experts predicted would go to Sinners.
