Conan O’Brien paid tribute to Martin Short as he signed off as host of the 98th Academy Awards.
“It’s been an honor and a joy,” he said of the hosting experience, his second time out. “We love you, Marty Short. Good night.”
O’Brien’s comments come less than a month after the news that Short’s daughter, Katherine Elizabeth Short, died by suicide at her home in Los Angeles at age 42.
Also recently mourning the loss of his SCTV co-star Catherine O’Hara, Short has taken time off from his comedy tour with Steve Martin since the news broke. It seems that he’ll pick up with that in April, if dates listed on Martin’s website are any indication.
Following the death of his daughter, Short and his family shared a statement to People that read, “It is with profound grief that we confirm the passing of Katherine Hartley Short. The Short family is devastated by this loss and asks for privacy at this time. Katherine was beloved by all and will be remembered for the light and joy she brought into the world.”
O’Brien is a longtime friend of Short’s who over the years has intersected with him on his podcast Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend, in the late-night world and elsewhere. View his remarks prior to exiting the Dolby Theatre stage below.
