Loyola Student, 18, Fatally Shot At Rogers Park Beach

ROGERS PARK — A Loyola student was fatally shot early Thursday at a Far North Side beach, officials said.

The victim was identified as Sheridan Gorman, 18, by Loyola University President Mark Reed.

“This is a tragic loss, and our hearts go out to Sheridan’s family, loved ones and all who knew her,” Reed said in a statement. “We are in close contact with law enforcement as they investigate and work to understand the full circumstances of this tragedy.

“Based on the information available to us now, there is no ongoing threat to our campus community.”

About 1:30 a.m., Gorman was with a group of friends in the 1000 block of West Pratt Boulevard when a man walked up to them and fired shots, officials said. The group was on the pier at Tobey Prinz Beach, and the gunman was wearing a mask, said Thomas Murray, Loyola’s director of campus safety.

Gorman was shot in her head and pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Detectives are investigating.

Ald. Maria Hadden (49th), whose ward includes much of Loyola’s campus, encouraged anyone who may have been near the beach or Loyola Park to contact her office or the 24th District police station if they saw anything suspicious.

“I’m going to be out and about the ward today and in communication with the Police Department, the Mayor’s Office and Loyola University as we process this and work to find answers for our community,” Hadden said in a video she shared on Facebook.

Loyola will hold a community reflection and prayer vigil 7 p.m. Thursday at Madonna della Strada Chapel, 6453 N. Kenmore Ave.
