Logan Township, NJ community rocked by explosion; video captures sound of blast in Swedesboro

LOGAN TWP., N.J. (WPVI) — Several people were hospitalized after a building explosion in Logan Township, New Jersey, on Wednesday.

Cooper University Hospital in Camden confirmed it is treating three people. There was no immediate word on their conditions.

The massive blast was felt across the immediate area. A doorbell camera from a home in nearby Swedesboro captured the sound of the explosion, while other videos showed a large plume of black smoke rising from the building.

Firefighters were seen pouring water onto the gutted structure as flames continued to burn.

The blast briefly forced a shelter-in-place within a two-mile radius of Heron Drive and High Hill Road, but the order has since been lifted, according to Gloucester County Emergency Management.

Officials say a neighboring building was also damaged in the incident.

Those working nearby thought something hit the building.

“I heard a really loud boom, shook our whole building. You know, you could feel it like go through you. I thought maybe someone hit our building or something,” said James Barber.

“The whole sky was a plume of smoke. I seen all the collapse units and technical rescues and hazmat coming in from all the different counties. It was bad when I got here,” added another witness.

The nature of the explosion is not yet known.

(EDITOR’S NOTE: An earlier version of this story reported six people were hurt. Hospital officials later clarified that only three people were hospitalized.)
