Johnson on Request for Jesse Jackson: It’s a No

House Speaker Mike Johnson has turned down the Jackson family’s request to have the Rev. Jesse Jackson lie in honor in the US Capitol, according to multiple reports. The Louisiana Republican is said to have weighed historical precedent, which has generally limited the Capitol rotunda tribute to former presidents, senior government figures, and select military honorees, reports the Hill. Recent requests for similar honors for conservative activist Charlie Kirk and former Vice President Dick Cheney were also rejected.

CNN notes that lying in honor at the US Capitol typically involves the public being able to come and pay their final respects to the casket of the honored individual. Jackson, who died this week at 84, was a two-time presidential candidate and prominent civil-rights leader who founded the Rainbow PUSH Coalition and served as a Democratic adviser, per the Hill. While political and cultural figures have occasionally been granted the Capitol recognition—e.g., civil rights icon Rosa Parks in 2005 and evangelist Billy Graham in 2018—the last person to lie in state there was former President Carter.

Precedent or not, Johnson is already receiving pushback, per the Washington Post. “Mike Johnson will defend a president who wants to unlawfully nationalize elections but won’t authorize a civil rights legend to lie in honor,” NAACP National President Derrick Johnson says. “That tells you everything you need to know about Mike Johnson and his gross disregard for our Constitution and our democracy.” Jackson is expected to be memorialized in Chicago in the coming weeks.
