The MCU has had its high and low points over the last few years, but if there’s one superhero almost guaranteed to please a crowd, it’s Spider-Man. The first trailer for “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” was released by Marvel this Wednesday, following a social media campaign where fans from different countries revealed new clips from the trailer throughout Tuesday.
When fans last saw Tom Holland‘s “Spider-Man” in 2021’s crossover film “No Way Home,” the webslinger had been erased from the history books by a spell from Dr. Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), which caused the world — and Peter Parker’s best friends MJ (Zendaya) and Ned (Jacob Batalon) — to forget his existence. With his Aunt May dead and with no ties left to the world, he recommitted himself to fighting crime in New York.
Set four years later, “Brand New Day” follows Peter as he continues his vigilante efforts, and in the process stumbles upon a larger mystery that puts him in the crosshairs of The Punisher, played by Jon Bernthal in his first film appearance as the character after starring in the “Daredevil” TV show and his own spinoff. Other returning MCU faces include Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner, and Michael Mando’s Scorpion from “Spider-Man: Homecoming.” Marvin Jones III will play the main villain Tombstone, while Saide Sink, Liza Colón-Zayas, and Tramell Tillman round out the cast. The film is named after the 2008 comic book “Brand New Day,” which similarly acted as a soft reboot/refresh for the character at the time.
Destin Daniel Cretton directs the film, from a script written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. The movie will be Cretton’s third project with Marvel Studios, after having directed the positively received “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” in 2021 and co-creating this January’s Disney+ series “Wonder Man.” The film is produced by Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal.
“Brand New Day” is the first MCU film to release in 2026, arriving in theaters almost exactly a year after “The Fantastic Four: First Steps.” This December, Marvel Studios will also release “Avengers: Doomsday,” from directors Anthony and Joe Russo.
“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” swings into movie theaters July 31. Watch the full trailer for the film below.
