Israel launches widespread strikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs
Israeli forces are bombing the densely populated southern suburbs of Lebanon‘s capital, Beirut.
Local media reported several strikes in the night of Thursday to Friday in Burj al-Barajneh and Haret Hreik, according to the Lebanese site L’Orient Today.
Israel’s military, the IDF, had earlier issued an unprecedented evacuation warning for an area called the Dahiyeh in south Beirut, which is a stronghold of the Iran-backed Hezbollah militant group.
“Save your lives and evacuate your homes immediately,” it said in a message on social media.
The warning sent residents fleeing in a panic.
Two hospitals in the area evacuated staff and patients, local media reported. Only a skeleton staff remained in Bahman Hospital to care for the sickest patients until they could be moved elsewhere, the New York Times said.
The IDF also reported strikes in the Baalbeck district, close to the Syrian border.
DW’s Beirut Bureau Chief Mohamad Chreyteh posted a video on X he said was of a shepherd evacuating with his herd from Naqoura on the border with Israel toward the western Beqaa amid ongoing Hezbollah–Israel attacks.
Early Friday morning, Hezbollah warned Israelis to evacuate towns within 5 kilometers (3 miles) of the border.
Lebanese health authorities say at least 123 people have been killed since Monday, with 683 wounded and at least 90,000 displaced.
