Crystal Hefner, the widow of late Playboy founder Hugh Hefner, has alleged that his scrapbooks and journals contain images of nude women taken without their consent and images of underage girls.
At a news conference Tuesday with lawyer Gloria Allred, Crystal Hefner said she is “deeply worried” about the images getting out.
“There are serious and unresolved concerns about the scope of what these books contain,” she said.
Crystal Hefner said there are more than 3,000 scrapbooks and journals that span decades, dating back to the 1960s.
Allred said she filed regulatory complaints, asking for California’s and Illinois’s attorneys general to launch an investigation into the Hugh M. Hefner Foundation regarding Hugh Hefner’s scrapbook and journal collection. (The foundation’s address is listed as in California, and Hugh Hefner was born and raised in Illinois.) The office of California’s attorney general did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The press secretary for the Illinois attorney general’s office said they received the complaint and are reviewing it.
Allred said the journals describe Hugh Hefner’s sexual exploits, including names, descriptions of the sex acts, and even sometimes tracking women’s menstrual cycles. Allred said the foundation has plans to digitize the photos.
The foundation did not immediately respond to HuffPost’s request for comment.
Allred also said that when Crystal Hefner spoke up about her concerns over the journals, she was fired as the foundation’s chief executive.
The Hugh M. Hefner Foundation was founded in 1964 and, according to its website, it “supports and funds today’s pioneers defending civil rights and liberties, with special emphasis on First Amendment rights and rational sex and drug policies.”
Crystal Hefner said that the “hypocrisy” is as “disturbing as it is obvious.”
“Women have the right to bodily autonomy, we have the right to control our own likeness. We have the right to say that intimate images created under unequal conditions do not get to follow us for the rest of our lives,” Crystal Hefner said.
Crystal and Hugh Hefner married in 2012 when she was 26 and he was 86 years old. They remained married until Hugh Hefner’s death in 2017. Since his death, Crystal Hefner has given several interviews in which she said Hugh Hefner was emotionally abusive and that she made several attempts to escape the Playboy Mansion while she was living there.
