‘Hoppers’ Is an Original Win for Pixar

If there’s one thing Disney can learn by looking over the past six months at the box office, it’s that the people long for anthropomorphized animals. Just a few months after Zootopia 2 took the world by storm, Pixar had its best opening weekend for an original film in nearly a decade with Hoppers. The animation film made $46 million domestically and $42 million internationally for a total worldwide gross of $88 million. Pixar hasn’t had that successful of an opening weekend for a non-sequel since 2017’s Coco, which scored $50 million domestically in its opening days. That film went on to gross $814 million, which would be a thrill for Pixar. All the studio’s big hits for years now have been sequels like Inside Out 2, Toy Story 4, and Incredibles 2, while originals like Elio struggle. This is a hop in the right direction.

On the other end of the spectrum, Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride! performed well below the already low expectations. The film scored just $7.2 million domestically with an additional $6.3 internationally — that’s a particularly frightful score for Warner Bros. because the film reportedly cost $90 million to make. Hey, at least star Jessie Buckley still has a near-guaranteed Oscar coming her way this weekend.
