A new Hilary Duff album? Well, that’s absolutely what dreams are made of. The former teen star released Luck… or Something, her first album in over a decade, at midnight on Friday.
“This album feels like a great representation of the past 10, almost 20 years. It’s a journey in being okay with yourself, your story, and the winding road that got you there,” Duff wrote on Instagram. “There are songs about love, heartbreak, life life-ing, insecurities, and growing up … I hope you find pieces of yourself in this record. I’ll see you out there! ✨🪩🍒”
Duff’s new LP comes three months after she announced the album. The Lizzie McGuire Movie star kicked off her Luck… or Something era and musical renaissance in November, when she unveiled the record’s lead single, “Mature.” She followed up the pop-rock track with a synth-pop offering, “Roommates.”
If these first two singles are any indication, Luck… or Something shows Duff at her most willing to dredge up the messiness of finding and falling in love as an adult. Where “Mature” serves as a scathing critique of an ex-lover with a “Scorpio touch,” “Roommates” is an anthem for the yearners, as Duff reminisces about the beginning of a relationship, when butterflies and late-night rendezvous were plentiful.
With Luck… or Something, Duff is older, wiser and, well, more mature. On “Holiday Party,” she concocts a cheating nightmare, imagining her husband “getting way too cozy” with another woman. Duff also details the rift with her older sister, Haylie, on “We Don’t Talk,” before delving into her fraught relationship with her father on the country-tinged cut “The Optimist.” “I wish I could sleep on planes/And that my father would really love me,” Duff admits on her most vulnerable track yet. On “Growing Up,” she interpolates Blink-182’s “Dammit” and celebrates female friendship.
The essence of Duff’s new era, however, is cemented in her pulsating closing track, “Adult Size Medium,” in which she reflects on the “heartbreaking and reassuring” realities of growing up once you’re on “the other side of cherry-flavored chapstick.”
This candor isn’t new for Duff, who, as a teen star, sang about embracing change (“So Yesterday”) and the giddiness of growing up (“Sweet Sixteen”). Luck… or Something feels like a catch-up sesh with a girlfriend you haven’t seen in a while. The two of you have settled into your couch, uncorked a bottle of orange wine and are finally ready to dive in.
“I just felt really ready to share,” Duff told Glamour for its February cover story. “One, I wanted to stretch creatively, and two, I wanted to make something that I could connect with people again on the level of who I am now. I felt like people have definitely gone through some of the similar large strokes that I have in the past 10 to 15 years.”
Fans can soon hear Duff perform tracks from Luck… Or Something live when she embarks on her upcoming “Lucky Me” world tour. She’ll kick things off in West Palm Beach, Fla., in June before taking the tour abroad through the winter. Duff is set to hit several cities in the U.K., Australia and Canada, before her grand finale in Mexico City on Feb. 12, 2027.
“The name says it all,” Duff wrote on Instagram last week alongside her official tour announcement. “I truly feel so lucky to be able to be onstage again in front of all of you beautiful people. I can’t wait! See you on the lucky me tour.”
