It is understood his personal physician will travel to Tenerife tomorrow and a further update will be provided.
This is the latest blow for King Harald of Norway, who celebrated his 89th birthday last week as his family finds itself engulfed in scandal.
His daughter-in-law, Crown Princess Mette-Marit, who was named roughly 1,000 times in the Jeffrey Epstein files, revealing a years-long friendship with the disgraced paedophile financier. Although she issued a ‘profound apology’ and admitted she ‘showed poor judgment’, the attempt to distance herself has not been enough for some Norwegians, who question whether she could ever now serve on the throne.
Then there is Mette Marit’s health. The 52-year-old suffers from an acute case of pulmanory fibrosis and might soon need a lung transplant, according to royal doctors, which has meant she has been forced to pull back from royal duties over recent months.
The mother-of-three is the wife of Harald’s son and heir, Crown Prince Haakon of Norway, with whom she shares a daughter, Princess Ingrid Alexandra, who is next in line to the throne, and son, Prince Sverre Magnus. When Haakon and Mette-Marit married in 2001, she was already mother to a four-year-old boy, Marius Borg Høiby, from a previous relationship.
