Harvey Weinstein is very sorry for cheating on his wives

Harvey Weinstein is set for a retrial in New York next month and is currently housed in Rikers Island in Queens. In January, The Hollywood Reporter‘s Maer Roshan met up with the disgraced Miramax founder for an interview, which was published in the trade today. The published article is wide-ranging and often bizarre. (For example, the story opens with an anecdote about Weinstein visiting Ground Zero right after 9/11 and eating the bagels reserved for the FDNY.) Weinstein maintains that he never sexually assaulted any woman, arguing he just “misled them” instead. When asked if using NDAs and hiring PIs to follow accusers is an indication of guilt, Weinstein responds, “Yes, but the thing I was doing wrong was not sexual assault. It was cheating on my wife. I was desperate to keep that secret from her. I did not want Disney to find out. I did everything to protect myself from that kind of scandal.”

Throughout his repeated avowals to prove his innocence and earn his release from prison, Weinstein also spends much of the interview airing grievances with other famous people. Gwyneth Paltrow comes up quite a bit, with Weinstein claiming that she made “such a big deal over nothing” and that she did so because “She wanted to be part of the crowd. I won’t forgive her for that.” He also claims that Peter Jackson lied when he said that Weinstein told him to blacklist Mira Sorvino and Ashley Judd. “If he says it again, I’ll sue him too,” says Weinstein. “The truth is, to retaliate against these women I would have needed the cooperation of the agencies. Call Ari Emanuel! Call Bryan Lourd! It never, ever, ever happened.” There’s also the requisite railing against cancel culture: “This is a crazy culture. This is McCarthyism. I wish Jeffrey Katzenberg would take my call. I wish Ted Sarandos would. Bradley Cooper.”

He’s supportive, however, of his ex-wife Georgina Chapman’s relationship with Adrien Brody, saying, “It’s good that my kids have someone in their lives. And Georgina suffered terribly because of me. I’m glad she’s finally found some happiness.”  At one point in the interview, Roshan says, “It sounds like what you’re most regretful for is cheating on your wife.” Weinstein again says he’s sorry for misleading the women whom he was found guilty of raping. (While the verdict in New York was overturned and he faces a retrial, the verdict in Los Angeles still stands.) “I misled them. I cheated on both my wives. That’s immoral. But I did not assault them. That is the big lie of all of this. I won’t apologize for something I didn’t do,” he continues. When asked his thoughts about the #MeToo movement outside of his own personal involvement, Weinstein says, “If women were getting hurt or exploited, I think that was good.” You can read the whole interview here
