CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – Polls for the 2026 primary election in North Carolina were closed, in most counties, as of 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
Election Day polls opened at 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 3 in counties across North Carolina. Polls closed at 7:30 p.m. — though any voter in line at 7:30 p.m. was still allowed to cast their ballot.
That is, except for Halifax County, where voting was extended until 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday due to a minor issue at one precinct.
That extension means that primary election results would not get released statewide until at least 8:30 p.m. The state elections board is not allowed to release unofficial election results while voting is underway, officials said Tuesday afternoon.

Returning your absentee ballot
If you’re voting by mail this primary election, it’s too late to mail your completed ballot in.
On Election Day, voters can drop off their completed absentee ballot in person at their local county board of elections office.
Absentee ballots must be received by your local county board of elections office by 7:30 p.m. on March 3, 2026, in order to be counted.
