The main event of tonight’s (Mar. 6) episode of SmackDown featured Drew McIntyre defending the WWE championship against Cody Rhodes. This match came about after McIntyre screwed Rhodes out of winning both the Royal Rumble and Elimination Chamber matches.
The match had a wild finish, with broken tables, multiple ref bumps, and each star using the other’s finishing move.
Drew got desperate and caused both ref bumps. He first pulled Charles Robinson into the path of a Disaster Kick. Rhodes hit McIntyre with Cross Rhodes soon after, but nobody was there to count the pin.
Rhodes waved Dan Engler down to the ring to take over ref duties, but Cody turned around right into a Claymore from McIntyre as Engler entered the ring. Even so, Cody wouldn’t stay down for the three count.
Drew has bad history with Engler, and he wasn’t happy with his count, so he took out the poor sap with a headbutt. McIntyre went to grab a chair to finish off Rhodes, but that’s when Jacob Fatu showed up out of nowhere to yank the weapon away from the champ.
The first ref recovered just in time for Cody to hit a Super Cody Cutter and Cross Rhodes to pin McIntyre and win the WWE championship.
With the victory, Rhodes is now back in the main event of WrestleMania 42 next month in Las Vegas, where he is scheduled to defend the belt against Randy Orton.
Is this how you expected Drew McIntyre’s reign as WWE champion to end? Did WWE book the finish that makes for the best WrestleMania card? Let me know in the comments below, Cagesiders.
