It’s going to be a brand new day in a big week for Peter Parker—after years of waiting and speculation about just what the new Spider-Man movie is going to be about, tomorrow, we’re going to get our first proper look at Brand New Day in action. But before we do, we’ll be seeing plenty of little teases, starting with one that recreates one of the most famous Spidey comic covers of all time.
This morning Tom Holland took to Instagram to announce that the first trailer for Brand New Day (named for the comic book storyline that came after the controversial retconning of Peter’s marriage to Mary Jane Watson out of existence) will premiere tomorrow, March 18. But, fittingly for a movie that managed to put out not one, not two, but three teasers for the start of its own production, you won’t get the trailer without a bit of prevarication.
Holland revealed that instead of simply just putting a trailer out—rather de rigueur these days, it seems—snippets will be released online throughout the day from various Spidey fans across the globe. “This is all about community, this is all about being together. So let’s go,” Holland said, kicking off the initiative, which began with a clip from the Instagram account Pol_Deportes, sharing pretty much one second of new footage.
But it is at least a good second to show off: the footage sees Peter in his brand new suit swinging into action, carrying someone under his arm—of course, a recreation of Spider-Man’s comics debut on the cover of Amazing Fantasy #15:
Capturing even the dull colors of the background, it’s a pretty fun and cheeky recreation—and perhaps an indication that Brand New Day wants to go back to the books on building a new era for the MCU’s Spidey, after his original trilogy was so tied up in the aftershocks of both the MCU and the cinematic Spider-Men that had come before.
Little is currently known about the events of Brand New Day, but last month, solicit information for the film’s upcoming art book from Penguin Random House did give us a vague synopsis:
Four years have gone by since we last caught up with our friendly neighborhood hero, Peter Parker is no more, but Spider-Man is at the top of his game keeping New York City safe. Things are going well for our anonymous hero until an unusual trail of crimes pulls him into a web of mystery larger than he’s ever faced before. In order to take on what’s ahead, Spider-Man not only needs to be at the top of his physical and mental game, but he must also be prepared to face the repercussions of his past!
We’ll no doubt start seeing some hints of those repercussions of the past tomorrow, when we get Brand New Day‘s trailer—in piecemeal and in full.
