Arby’s to Replace McDonald’s Later This Year

Derwood

Arby’s has signed on to take over the soon-to-close McDonald’s location in Derwood, making its return to Montgomery County in the longtime drive-thru site at 7200 Muncaster Mill Road in the Red Mill Shops shopping center.

The McDonald’s, which has served the area for decades, is scheduled to close permanently on March 15. In recent weeks, exterior signage has already begun coming down from the building as the restaurant prepares for its final days this weekend.

Last month, Derwood resident Irene Johnson shared video showing workers removing the McDonald’s signage from the building, signaling that the longtime restaurant was nearing the end of its run. The closure marks the end of a location that has spanned multiple fast-food eras in the community.

Before becoming a McDonald’s in the mid-1980s, the building previously operated as both a Roy Rogers and a Hardee’s. State property records show the structure was built in 1985 and has remained part of the area’s commercial landscape for more than 40 years.

Arby’s has now signed on for the site and will take over the building once McDonald’s closes. Additional details about the timeline for renovations and the restaurant’s opening have not yet been announced, but Arby’s is expected to make its return to Montgomery County later this year.
