Apple no longer offers M3 Ultra Mac Studio with original highest RAM configuration

A year ago today, Apple unveiled the M4 Max and M3 Ultra Mac Studio desktop computer. In addition to Thunderbolt 5 and SSD storage configurable to 16TB, Apple advertised the Mac Studio as featuring up to 512GB of unified memory. As of this week, the highest RAM upgrade option is no longer available.

Apple highlighted the highest RAM configuration in the press release for the M3 Ultra Mac Studio:

Mac Studio is a powerhouse for AI, capable of running large language models (LLMs) with over 600 billion parameters entirely in memory, thanks to its advanced GPU and up to 512GB of unified memory with M3 Ultra — the most ever in a personal computer.

As MacRumors notes, customers ordering a new M3 Ultra Mac Studio today no longer have the option to configure the desktop Mac with 512GB RAM. The issue is likely due to global supply constraints thanks in large part to high memory needs for servers powering AI.

The M3 Ultra Mac Studio still offers the most configurable RAM in a Mac with its 256GB memory option. That’s compared to the M2 Ultra Mac Pro which offers up to 192GB RAM, and M4 Max/M5 Max machines that support up to 128GB RAM.
