Apple announces Studio Display XDR with 120Hz refresh rate, mini-LED, more

Apple has officially announced the Studio Display XDR, which it says “delivers the most advanced display technology and a robust set of features for pro users who need the ultimate front-of-screen performance.”

The new Studio Display XDR features a 27-inch 5K Retina XDR display with 5120-by-2880 resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate, and more. Head below for the details.

Apple says:

Studio Display XDR features a stunning 27-inch 5K Retina XDR display with 5120-by-2880 resolution, offering exceptional detail and clarity.

The mini-LED backlight utilizes 2,304 local dimming zones that enable extreme contrast. Studio Display XDR also delivers up to an outstanding 1000 nits of SDR brightness, 2000 nits of peak HDR brightness, and a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio. This wide dynamic range — from the brightest brights to the deepest blacks — makes HDR content pop off the screen while virtually eliminating distracting halo and blooming effects.

Here are the specs of the Studio Display XDR:

  • 27-inch (diagonal) 5K Retina XDR display
  • 5120-by-2880 resolution at 218 pixels per inch
  • Mini-LED backlight with 2304 dimming zones
  • Up to 1000 nits brightness (SDR)
  • 2000 nits pea brightness (HDR)
  • 120Hz refresh rate and Adaptive Sync
  • Support for 1 billion colors
  • P3 + Adobe RGB wide color gamuts
  • True Tone technology

The Studio Display XDR has a 12MP Center Stage camera with support for Desk View. There’s also a “high-fidelity six-speaker system” with Spatial Audio support and a three-mic array for “studio-quality” recording.

Here are the ports:

  • One upstream Thunderbolt 5 port for host (with 140W host charging)
  • One downstream Thunderbolt 5 ports for connecting high-speed accessories or daisy-chaining additional displays
  • Two USB-C ports (up to 10Gb/s)

Here’s John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering:

“Apple has led the industry in delivering the world’s most advanced displays for pros to do their life’s best work, and today we do that once again with the introduction of the new Studio Display family.

“Studio Display gets even better with a new 12MP Center Stage camera and powerful Thunderbolt 5 connectivity. And the Studio Display XDR is a huge leap forward for XDR technology, with a mini-LED backlight, 2000 nits of peak HDR brightness, advanced color accuracy, and a 120Hz refresh rate, transforming workflows like filmmaking, design and print, and 3D animation. It’s by far the world’s best pro display.”

The overall design of the Studio Display XDR is basically identical to the standard Studio Display. For instance, it does not carryover the iconic lattice pattern from the Pro Display XDR.

The Studio Display XDR with a tilt- and height-adjustable stand starts at $3,299. It will go up for pre-order tomorrow, March 4 at 6:15 a.m. PT, with availability beginning Wednesday, March 11. It’s available with standard glass and nano-texture glass options, with the latter coming as a $300 upgrade.

In addition to the high-end Studio Display XDR, Apple has also launched a new version of the standard Studio Display, which you can read more about here.
