After Sunday Storms, Chicago To Get Hit By Snow And Bitter Cold, Weather Service Says

CHICAGO — The city will see a cold, snowy return to winter weather this week as storms roll through the region starting Sunday, when temperatures will drop 50 degrees over the span of two days.

Sunday will see several rounds of scattered showers and thunderstorms throughout the day and evening, with temperatures bouncing back to the mid 60s from the end of the week’s cold plunge, according to the National Weather Service. The weekend’s high winds continued Sunday, with gusts reaching 30 miles per hour.

A line of thunderstorms is expected in Chicago around 4 p.m. Sunday following showers earlier in the day.

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago put out an advisory Sunday morning directing Chicagoans to limit their use of water to help reduce flooding risk. Some recommended measures include:

  • Delay showers and baths
  • Flush less frequently
  • Wait to run the dishwasher or washing machine

Falling temperatures starting Sunday night will turn that precipitation to snow, however.

“The system is a very strong cold front that’s going to move through the area tonight,” National Weather Service meteorologist Zachary Yack said. “That’s why you’re going to have temperatures today that are in the 50s and 60s drop by tomorrow morning because we’ll be behind that colder air.”

Temperatures will plummet overnight into Monday as the rain turns to “patchy blowing snow after 4 a.m,” according to the weather service. Temperatures could reach as low at 10 degrees on Monday night and Tuesday morning, with highs on Tuesday in the mid 20s. Some snow could blow through Chicago Tuesday night, according to the weather service’s forecast.

There won’t be much snow accumulation through the week, but high winds can create “drifting snow” conditions that create low visibility and slick spots for drivers, Yack said.

Wednesday’s temperatures will climb back into the 40s. On Thursday, they could hit 60 again, with lows in the mid-30s overnight. Friday will be partially sunny, with a potential high of 65 degrees, according to the weather service.

The extreme temperature variations this week are typical of weather patterns in mid-March, Yack said.
