A Woman Found This Massive Stone in a Stream, It’s Now Ranked Among the Largest Intact Amber Ever Discovered

A woman in Romania unknowingly kept one of the largest intact pieces of amber in the world propping open her door for years. The 3.5-kilogram stone, later identified as rare rumanite, is now valued at nearly 1 million euros and classified as a national treasure.

The discovery traces back to the village of Colți, in Buzău County, where the woman found the stone near a stream and brought it home, unaware of its true nature. Its dark, reddish tones may have caught her eye, but nothing suggested it was a fossilized resin tens of millions of years old.

Only after her death in 1991 did a relative begin to suspect that the object might hold more than decorative or practical value. That intuition ultimately led to an expert evaluation and a remarkable reassessment of what had long been treated as an ordinary rock.

A Chance Find Along A River

The stone was discovered near the bed of a stream not far from the Buzău River, an area known for amber deposits. Weighing approximately 3.5 kilograms, the piece stood out for its black and reddish hues. The woman brought it home and used it as a doorstop for decades.

Amber extraction has taken place in the sandstone along the banks of the Buzău River since the 1920s, making the presence of fossilized resin in the region well documented. Still, stumbling upon a specimen of this size and quality remained unusual.

According to reporting relayed by El País, the house was at one point targeted by jewelry thieves. The stone, mistaken for a simple rock, was left untouched.

Giant Intact Amber Identified

After the woman’s death, the inherited house, and the stone, came under closer scrutiny. The piece was sold to the Romanian state, which commissioned specialists at the Museum of History in Kraków to examine it.

Experts determined that the object was rumanite, a sought-after variety of amber distinguished by its intense red shades. Amber, a fossilized tree resin, can preserve insects and plant material and is typically millions of years old. In this case, specialists estimated the specimen to be between 38 and 70 million years old.

According to the expert assessment cited by the same source, the stone ranks among the largest intact amber pieces in the world.

Once a Household Item, Now a National Treasure

The amber’s estimated value reaches approximately 1 million euros, a figure that reflects both its exceptional size and its rarity. The specimen was identified as one of the largest intact pieces of rumanite ever recorded, which significantly increased its scientific and monetary worth.

Following its authentication by experts commissioned by the Romanian state, it was officially classified as a national treasure of Romania. Since 2022, the piece has been housed at the Buzău Provincial Museum, where it is preserved and exhibited as part of the country’s geological heritage.

“Its discovery represents a great significance both at a scientific level and at a museum level,” Daniel Costache, director of the Provincial Museum of Buzău, told El País.
