Arrest made after violent attack on crossing guard in Darby, Pa. outside Walnut Street Elementary School that was caught on video

DARBY, Pa. (WPVI) — A suspect has been arrested for the assault of a crossing guard in Darby Borough, Delaware County.

Rashiem Russell, 29, of West Philadelphia, was arrested at 11 a.m. Friday in Darlington, South Carolina.

He is being held and awaiting extradition to Pennsylvania.

The incident occurred shortly after 3:30 p.m. on Monday during dismissal outside Walnut Street Elementary School as students looked on.

According to police, the guard told detectives that Russell had been driving aggressively as she helped students cross the street and that she ordered him to stop.

Court records say Russell then parked his car, chased her down and hit her, knocking her unconscious.

“If you commit a crime in Darby, you will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” Darby Borough Mayor Joar Dahn.

Officials credited cooperative police work for leading to Russell’s capture.

Court documents state that Philadelphia police stopped Russell’s 2009 gold Nissan Altima on Wednesday, but two women – not Russell – were inside.

One woman told detectives that Russell had fled to South Carolina.

“The information was credible. So at that point we started scouring what possible connections, family members he may have, and we determined there was a very close family member in the city Darlington, South Carolina,” U.S. Marshals Supervisory Deputy Robert Clark said.

Russell faces aggravated assault and related charges and is awaiting extradition to Pennsylvania. State Sen. Anthony Williams had offered a $5,000 reward in the case.

“As soon as the crime was solved, they showed and wanted their $5,000, and they will get their $5,000,” Williams said.

Authorities say the victim suffered both physical and emotional injuries but is recovering.

She has chosen to remain anonymous and has resigned from her position as a crossing guard.
