Paramount Passes On Max Landis’ “G.I. Joe” Take

Paramount Pictures

Paramount Pictures and Hasbro are reportedly not moving forward with one of their proposed new takes on “G.I. Joe” reports Variety.

Word broke last month that screenwriter Max Landis had been hired by the studio to pen a treatment for a new feature adaptation of the Hasbro toy brand.

At the same time, “The Righteous Gemstones” star/creator Danny McBride was hired to work on a separate script for the project. One plan rumored was that they would try to blend the two scripts into one.

The trade now says they’ve passed on Landis’ treatment and have cited creative reasons. McBride’s script is still in play though, and the studio is said to be in talks with and awaiting scripts from other writers.

Landis tells the trade his pitch centered on the idea that the franchise’s key villain, the villainouse organisation COBRA, had “successfully taken over the world and reduced GI Joe to a conspiracy theory”.

The new leadership at Paramount is prioritizing the relaunch of known IPs, including this one.
