Lucid Announces Cosmos And Earth EVs To Battle Tesla Model Y

• Lucid’s first mid-size electric SUVs will be called Cosmos and Earth.
• The two models will bring back the old-fashioned way of opening car doors.
• Set to debut later this year, the Lucid Cosmos and Earth will have a gigantic display.

Lucid’s first mid-size electric SUVs will be called Cosmos and Earth, the company confirmed today during its Investor Day 2026 event in New York City. A third model based on the same platform is also in the works, but its name has not been revealed yet.

The Lucid Cosmos and Earth are the California-based startup’s ticket to the big league, so it has to do things right. After delivering the outstanding but rather expensive Air sedan and Gravity SUV, both of which are larger vehicles, the new mid-size crossovers will go after a completely different audience, considering their estimated starting price of around $50,000.

Details are still pretty scarce, but Lucid officials said that the Cosmos and Earth EVs will ride on an 800-volt battery system with a zonal architecture that supports bidirectional charging. A new drive unit dubbed “Atlas” will power the company’s new crossovers, with Lucid boasting a 23% reduction in weight and a 30% reduction in parts compared to the current-generation motors.

A definitive range figure is not out yet, but Lucid officials said that the Cosmos only needs 69 kilowatt-hours of battery capacity to go 300 miles on a full charge, and that the actual range will be higher. That’s all thanks to the work put in by designers and engineers to make the EV as aerodynamic as possible, with a drag coefficient of just 0.22.

Mechanical door handles are also part of the equation, as opposed to the go-to electrically controlled door handles that have been made popular by Tesla, Rivian, and even Lucid.

What’s more, the two mid-size Lucid crossovers will ditch the center touchscreen that’s currently found in the Air sedan and Gravity SUV. Instead, a single, ultra-widescreen display will sit on top of the dashboard, offering the driver and passengers all of the necessary information.

According to Lucid, the Cosmos will be an urban, on-road, performance-oriented vehicle, while the Earth leans a little more toward the suburban, any-road driver. Meanwhile, the third model in the mid-size category, whose name has yet to be revealed, will be the most adventure-ready model.

The company didn’t say if any part of the new display will be touch-sensitive, but it did mention that it will be divided into four different zones. Starting from the left side, the screen will show energy-related information, navigation, entertainment, and various other tidbits, such as the weather forecast.

Lucid added that an artificial intelligence-powered assistant with a natural voice will be at the center of the user experience, which might explain the lack of a center touchscreen. Whether or not the company manages to deliver a usable system that’s not annoying or nagging remains to be seen.
