“We demand immediate answers from Kyiv regarding large cash shipments passing through Hungary that raise serious questions about a possible link to the Ukrainian war mafia,”Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said in a post on X. “Since January, $900 million and €420 million in cash, as well as 146 kilograms of gold, have been transported across Hungary. If this is truly a transaction between banks, why was it not carried out by transfer?
“Until Kyiv provides clear explanations about the origin and purpose of the funds, Hungarian authorities will conduct a thorough investigation,” he added.
Kyiv called the Hungarian actions “banditism” and demanded to release citizens and funds.
“Orban’s list of demands for Ukraine this morning was particularly telling. This is what typically happens after people are taken hostage: demands. We will not tolerate this state banditism,” Foreign Minister Sybiha said.
“We reserve the right to take appropriate action, including initiating sanctions and other restrictive measures. We once again demand Hungary stop dragging Ukraine into its domestic politics and electoral campaign.”
The incident comes amid a rapidly escalating dispute between Kyiv and Budapest over oil flows through the Druzhba pipeline, which supplies Russian crude to Hungary and Slovakia and has been disrupted after a January drone attack damaged infrastructure in Ukraine.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has accused Kyiv of blocking oil supplies — which Kyiv denies — and vowed Thursday to “break the Ukrainian oil blockade by force.” Speaking on a radio show Friday morning, Orbán warned: “We will also stop things that are important to Ukraine passing through Hungary.”
