The First Trailer for ‘Lanterns’ Teases a Very Different DC Show

Arriving a little ahead of schedule than DC Studios head honcho James Gunn initially planned, HBO has revealed the first full trailer for Lanterns—and it’s looking like something very different from anything we’ve seen from the revitalized DCU so far.

Lanterns stars Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre as DC Comics stalwarts Hal Jordan and John Stewart, both wielders of the light of the Green Lanterns, an interstellar peacekeeping force of will-powered cosmic superheroes. Although Gunn’s Superman already introduced us to one of their members, Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner (who is also set to make an appearance here), Lanterns will focus on John being taken under Hal’s wing to learn the ropes of being a Green Lantern… and see John butt heads with his teacher as they both tackle a mysterious murder in a quiet rural town.

The vibe is very different from anything we’ve seen from the rebooted DC Universe of films and shows so far, even Lanterns’ fellow HBO series Peacemaker, trading a lot of the overt comic-book-ness (even with a gag nodding to Ch’p, the squirrel Green Lantern from planet H’lven) for a darker, more grounded murder-mystery tone. We get a few glimpses of more than that in this teaser—a Lantern uniform on a clothes railing here, a little bit of Hal taking flight there, and even a few glimpses of a Lantern ring and power battery—but the message so far seems to be preparing us for a very different spin on the DCU so far.

Lanterns hits HBO in August, after the release of Supergirl in theaters this June.
