- Marshals premiered on March 1 on CBS.
- The Yellowstone spinoff revealed the fate of Kayce Dutton’s wife, Monica.
- The show’s creator explained why the character was written off.
Any fan of Yellowstone or its spinoffs knows that no character is safe. Taylor Sheridan’s ruthless storylines have brought an end to even the shows’ biggest stars (look no further than the brutal death of Kevin Costner’s John Dutton for proof). Still, the loss of one major character has caused a strong reaction from viewers of the newest spinoff, Marshals.
Spoilers ahead!
Marshals premiered on CBS on March 1, and the Kayce Dutton series wasted no time in revealing the fate of Kayce’s wife, Monica. The character, portrayed by Kelsey Asbille, was a series regular, appearing in all five seasons of the Paramount Network hit, but the Marshals trailer suggested that she would not be a part of the new series. Sure enough, the character never appeared, and viewers learned that Monica died of cancer as a result of contaminated water on Black Rock Reservation.
In an interview with TV Insider, series creator Spencer Hudnut revealed the reason that Monica was killed off. “Kayce and Monica had such a beautiful ending [in] Yellowstone so when I first met with Luke, he was like, ‘Kayce’s really happy. Are we going to make a show about a guy who’s really happy?’ We had to shake up his life, to get him off the ranch and into a new position.”
What’s more, they felt that the issue surrounding Monica’s death was important to highlight: “We’re shining a light on an issue. She passes because of cancer. Reservations have a high rate of cancer because of all the toxins that have been dumped on them. We wanted to make her death about a bigger issue. We wanted to be very respectful of that character.”
Luke admits that he was “heartbroken” when he learned of Monica’s fate. “Kelsey’s become one of my best friends,” he told TV Insider. “She’s the coolest actor I’ve ever worked with. She’s down to earth, sweet, and kind to every other actor and the crew.”
He explained that he called Kelsey, and she took the news in stride. “We had a great conversation,” Luke said. “In true Kelsey fashion, she handled it like a pro and totally understood. She’s going to do just fine. She is so talented, gorgeous, and awesome. She’s going to work. That’s not an issue.”
Monica’s character has been divisive for Yellowstone fans, and her storyline has been filled with tragedy. Her death certainly marks a new start for Kayce and their son, Tate. If you watched the premiere, let us know your thoughts in the comments!
