The build to the WWE Women’s Championship match at WrestleMania 42 has escalated on social media. On March 1, champion Jade Cargill and challenger Rhea Ripley engaged in a heated back-and-forth on X that included accusations of complaining to WWE writers and relying on the company’s social media team.
The exchange began when Ripley tagged Cargill in a post sharing two old interview clips. The footage, dating back to 2023 and 2024, showed Cargill praising Ripley as a “dream opponent.” In the clips, Cargill referred to Ripley as a “powerhouse” who “ragdolls people around,” acknowledging her dominant streak and stating that Ripley was at the “top right now.” Ripley used the resurfaced footage to mock Cargill, implying that she has always been on the champion’s radar, but now the threat of facing her is a reality.
Cargill responded by quote-posting Ripley’s post and attaching a 25-second video from her own recent appearance on the “Beyond the Bell Podcast.” The virtual roundtable show featured a panel discussing wrestling topics. In the video, Cargill is seen holding her WWE Women’s Championship, laughing off her previous comments and stating, “I just be talking.”
Cargill accompanied the video with a caption taking a direct shot at how Ripley’s content is managed, suggesting the company artificially props her up ahead of their match.
“HA! I just be talking . & which member of our social team found that video for you????” Cargill wrote. “Cause we know they always have to find a way to keep you “on top” going into mania 🥱”
The banter continued when Ripley replied to Cargill, taking aim at the champion’s tendency to talk rather than act.
“All you seem to do is talk… And that’s literally it,” Ripley wrote.
Cargill immediately fired back with a comment implying that Ripley frequently lobbies WWE’s writing team for better storylines and television time.
“Talk??? Like the hours you spend talking to creative? 😂” Cargill posted.
The thread garnered over 340,000 views as of a couple of hours ago. Fan reactions varied, with many users expressing excitement over the increasingly personal nature of the rivalry. Some commenters speculated that Cargill’s jab about WWE creative intentionally blurred the lines between the scripted television show and real-life backstage interactions. Other users posted memes and GIFs reacting to the tension. A segment of the fanbase used the thread to push back against the current storyline, calling for a match between Cargill and Charlotte Flair instead.
This follows WWE Elimination Chamber, where Ripley Ripley outlasted Tiffany Stratton, Alexa Bliss, Asuka, Raquel Rodriguez, and Kiana James to win the Women’s Elimination Chamber match. Ripley and Cargill will compete for the title at WrestleMania 42 this April at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
