Three Chicago hospitals have secured spots on Newsweek’s “World’s Best Hospitals 2026” list, the publication announced Wednesday.
For the eighth year, Newsweek released its annual report, which recognized the top 250 institutions out of the 2,500 hospitals evaluated worldwide.
According to the publication, each hospital was given a score based on four data sources: recommendations from medical experts—including doctors, hospital managers and other health care professionals—hospital quality metrics, existing patient experience data and Statista’s Patient-Reported Outcome Measures Implementation Survey.
The first Illinois hospital to make this year’s list, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, claimed spot No. 61. Northwestern received a PROMs ribbon, and was the only Illinois hospital to do so. Newsweek defined PROMs as “standardized, validated questionnaires completed by patients to measure their perception of their functional well-being and quality of life.”
Also on the list was Rush University Medical Center at No. 130. Following closely behind was the University of Chicago Medical Center at No. 135.
While not in Illinois, two Midwest hospitals ranked among the top five, including the world’s best hospital. Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, claimed the top spot, as it has in all eight years of the list.
Sitting at No. 3 was the Cleveland Clinic. Both hospital systems were awarded four PROMs Ribbons, according to Newsweek.
