The Medical Examiner’s office confirmed to Deadline that Greene’s cause of death was a gunshot wound “of left axilla with injury of brachial artery.” The wound caused extensive bleeding; the manner of death was determined by the ME as accidental.

The 66-year-old Greene was discovered in his Lower East Side apartment after a neighbor phoned the landlord and the police to conduct wellness checks. Neighbors have reported hearing Christmas music coming from Greene’s apartment non-stop for several days.

The actor, born in Montclair, New Jersey, was candid about his past struggles with addiction, although he reportedly had been sober for at least a couple years at the time of his passing.

His most prominent roles among many credits were as the villain Zed in Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction and as antagonist Dorian Tyrell opposite Jim Carrey in The Mask.

On TV, he was a series regular on the NBC drama series The Black Donnellys and recurred on ABC’s Life on Mars and NBC’s Chicago P.D. He most recently appeared in an episode of the John Wick prequel series The Continental.
