More than 30,000 without power in Denver area

More than 100,000 customers were left in the dark on Sunday as widespread power outages hit the Denver area, according to energy utility officials.

As of 4 p.m. Sunday, Core Electric Cooperative power outages included:

  • 23,416 customers in Arapahoe County,
  • 20,242 customers in Douglas County,
  • 691 customers in Elbert County,
  • And 1 customer in Adams County.

The cause of the outages was unknown at that time, and it was unclear when power would be restored. The utility did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Xcel Energy spokesperson Michelle Aguayo confirmed in an email to The Denver Post that “a large outage” was also impacting that utility’s customers in the southeast metro area. As many as 145,000 Xcel customers were impacted, but that number was constantly shifting as crews rerouted power, Aguayo said.

“It started at one of our substations and crews are on the scene working on repairs and finding the cause of the outage,” Aguayo said. “We appreciate our customers’ patience as our crews work as quickly as possible to safely restore power.”
