Amazon Luna, the company’s barely talked about, struggling game streaming service, is once again making some big changes. This time around, Amazon is removing the ability to buy new games through the service or sign up for third-party subscriptions like EA Play. And in June, any games you did buy through Luna will no longer be playable via streaming. There will also be no refunds.
On April 10, Amazon announced that it is “always looking for ways to better serve our players” and that “feedback” has made it “clear” that gamers who use Luna want “easy access to great games.” And because more of that content is now offered via Amazon Prime, the company has decided that the best way to “serve” you and other users is to rip out most of Luna’s gaming options and remove access to paid games you bought in the past. Do you feel better served?
Starting today, Amazon will no longer offer individual game purchases or new third-party subscriptions. You’ll still be able to play games you bought on Luna…for a bit. Then, on June 10, Amazon is removing that feature completely from Luna. If you linked your Luna account to Ubisoft, EA, or another third-party service, Amazon says you’ll be able to keep playing your purchased games through those stores and apps. That’s nice, but if you don’t own a device capable of playing any of these games natively—and that very well might be the case for many Luna users who decided to go with streaming instead—you’ll essentially lose access to your purchased games in June unless you buy some hardware to play games like Star Wars Outlaws or set up a different streaming option.
Amazon is not offering refunds to anyone for any games purchased through Luna, either. At least when Google killed its streaming service, Stadia, a few years back, it refunded game purchases.
Amazon Luna continues to struggle
Launched in 2020, Amazon Luna has never been much of a big hit for the company, which has struggled to even figure out what to do with it. Initially, it was offered up as a Stadia competitor, providing access to big and small third-party games. This apparently didn’t work out for Amazon. So in 2025, Amazon officially announced plans to pivot Luna to a service focused on Jackbox-like casual games.
This latest shake-up for Luna further focuses the service on these kinds of games and will put everything available on the service behind different sub tiers, similar to Game Pass.
This is all just a great reminder to never, ever, ever, ever buy a video game through a streaming service. At least you can download digital games offline and make backups for later. With shit like Luna and Stadia, you are fully dependent on the company in charge not being greedy and shitty for as long as you want to play your games. And considering how greedy and shitty tech giants and game publishers often are in 2026, that’s not a risk worth taking.
