Oil prices spike as Iran steps up tanker attacks

An “attack” took place on an Italian base in the city of Erbil, located in Iraq’s northeastern Kurdish region, according to Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani.

“I strongly condemn the attack on the Italian base in Erbil,” Tajani posted on his X account, adding he had spoken with the Italian ambassador to Iraq.

“Fortunately, all our soldiers are well and safe in the bunker.”

The commander of Camp Singara in Erbil, Stefano Pizzotti, said it is unclear whether a missile or a drone was involved.

“The type of threat is still being determined, whether it was a drone or a missile,” Pizzotti told the SKYTG24 news channel.

“It hit the Italian base and caused some damage to the base’s infrastructure and equipment”, he said.

Drones were shot down over Erbil by US-led international forces, which are based at the city’s airport, a Kurdish security force said.

Italian forces train Kurdish security officers as part of the international force located in Erbil.

The area has been repeatedly targeted since the outbreak of the war between Iran, the US, and Israel.
